Holidays and Travel

Travel light – most airlines are now charging for luggage. If you can carry everything in a small suitcase you’ll save money.

If you plan to stay in a city a long time, renting an apartment can be a good option. Furnished apartments are usually cheaper than hotels and, you’ll get the comforts of home without spending a lot of money.

Personal Finances

Get an empty jar for loose coins. Every time you get home put any coins you may have in your pocket or purse into the jar. It won’t make you a millionaire but it all adds up over time.

General Shopping

Don’t go to the supermarket if you’re hungry. It’s guaranteed to give you a huge dose of ‘impulse buying’.

Fashionistas with limited budgets should follow the 70/30 rule: 70% of your closet should be classic pieces, 30% trendy pieces. Go as cheap as possible on trendy items because they have a short closet lifespan.

Entertainment and Lifestyle

A luxuries night out does not have to be expensive. Skip the appetizer, order wine by the glass and drink more water, then share a great dessert. Keep an eye out for happy hour specials and hit up the latest weekend matinee.

Back to School

Don’t spend money on brand new plastic for textbook covers. Save money and be creative by using old gift wrapping paper, newspaper, or plain brown grocery bags which the kids can draw on and decorate after the book is covered.

In the Garden

Use old pantyhose as tiebacks for your climbing plants. Cut them into strips and use to tie them to their supports. The hose is soft so as to not damage the plant, and quickly disappears into the foliage

 Transport and Cars

Remove any unnecessary items from the boot or the back seat of your car. These all add unnecessary weight and can reduce the fuel efficiency of your car.

Romance

Pretend you’re going on a first date — show up at the door with flowers, all dressed up, with your car washed and cleaned, looking spiffy. Recreate the first time.

Around the House

Trade services – the old bartering system is a great way to save money.  Eg: give a neighbour a haircut (if that’s your regular job) in return for a car service (if that’s their regular job)

Christmas

Consider a Kris Kringle (Secret Santa) for large family gift-giving events; where everyone draws a name out of a hat and buys a present only for that person. (You’re not the only one on a budget)
